Flood Forum
The OCWA in partnership with the Moodna Creek Watershed Intermunicipal Council, OC Department of Planning
and Town of Blooming Grove are pleased to bring you a series of free public educational forums
concerning flooding in Orange County, NY.
Flooding 101: The first forum held on December 6th helped residents and professionals understand the basics of what causes our streams and rivers to flood and obatined an overview of floodplains, flood mapping and regulations. This forum featured presentations from two United States Military Academy at West Point Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering faculty as well as NYS DEC Senior Staff. Presentations were followed by an expert panel to field questions from the audience. We are so pleased to see how many people attended the Forum - standing room only was left.
OC Flooding Forum II: This forum, held on February 7th, expanded on the the first forum and provided further details concerning flooding including how to smartly plan for future floods and protect and repair streambanks and infrastructure before and after a flood happens. Presentations by The Chazen Companies, Stone Environmental Inc, and the Hudson River Watershed Alliance covered a wide variety of information from the basics (why parts of Orange County is prone to flooding), to complex solutions (replacing damages bridges and culverts). Approximately 100 people attended this forum ranging from municipal and elected officials, farmers, residents, engineers, planners and more.
